How Pay-to-Rank Boards Work

Pay-to-rank boards sell positions, not votes. CrowdSpark uses recency plus an escalating floor: every validated payment takes #1, previous entries drop. Empty board is $1, then each #1 costs at least $1 more than the current leader. This differs from cumulative-bid systems where your bid total determines your static rank.

What is a Pay-to-Rank Board?

A pay-to-rank board is a public list where rank is purchased directly, not earned through votes, upvotes, or engagement. You pay a specific amount to claim a position. The board displays all entries with their payment amounts, names, optional URLs, and optional notes.

How Does CrowdSpark's Ranking Work?

CrowdSpark uses a recency model with an escalating floor:

  1. Empty board: first person pays $1.00 to take #1
  2. After that: to take #1, you must pay at least $1.00 MORE than the current #1's amount
  3. Every successful payment becomes the new #1
  4. Previous #1 drops to #2, previous #2 drops to #3, and so on
  5. All entries are permanent and remain on the board

Paying more than the minimum is allowed. For example, if #1 paid $5, you can pay $10 to take the top spot (the minimum would be $6, but you chose to pay more).

How Does This Differ from Cumulative-Bid Systems?

Some pay-to-rank boards (like outbid.lol, biddr.lol, rankr.lol) use cumulative bidding:

  • You can "top up" your existing entry by paying more
  • Your rank is determined by your total cumulative bid amount
  • You can sit at #3 and pay more to move to #1 without creating a new entry

CrowdSpark works differently:

  • Every payment is a new entry
  • The newest payment always takes #1, regardless of amount (as long as it meets the minimum)
  • You cannot "top up" an existing entry
  • If you want to retake #1 after someone else claims it, you pay again as a completely new entry

Why Use Recency Instead of Cumulative Bidding?

The recency model creates a simpler, more predictable system:

  • Clear minimum: You always know the exact minimum to take #1 (current #1 + $1)
  • No hidden totals: You see what each entry paid, not a hidden cumulative sum
  • Permanent history: Each entry is a snapshot in time that stays on the board
  • Escalating floor: The minimum naturally increases as people compete
